The Phaistos Disc is one of the most famous and enigmatic archaeological finds from Minoan Crete. It was discovered in 1908 by Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier at the palace of Phaistos, located in central Crete. The disc is a circular clay artifact, approximately 15-16 centimeters in diameter and about 1.5 centimeters thick, featuring inscriptions on both sides arranged in a spiral pattern.
The disc is significant for several reasons:
Material and Construction: It is made of clay, and the inscriptions were created using seals, a unique technique for its time.
Script: The symbols on the disc are inscribed in a spiral from the center outward, and they do not resemble any known writing systems of the time, such as Linear A or Linear B.
Language: The language and content of the disc remain unknown, as it has not been deciphered. It is believed to possibly represent a ritual or symbolic writing system.
The Phaistos Disc has been the subject of study and speculation for over a century. Various theories have been proposed about what it might depict or describe, but there is no definitive decryption to date.
It remains one of the most important and mysterious artifacts of the Minoan period and is housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion in Crete.
