Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral.
Its name comes from the Greek words “sideros” (iron) and “pyr” (fire), as it was believed to produce fire, since it generated sparks when struck against hard metal surfaces. The term remained and became international, although it was once used to refer to almost all mixed sulfides. In the past, it was also called “fool’s gold” due to its color, which resembles that of native gold. However, it is easily distinguished from gold by its much greater hardness (6.5 compared to gold’s 2.5) and the black streak of its powder (gold’s streak is yellow).

Although it crystallizes in the cubic system, it exhibits imperfect symmetry, as the crystal faces (especially of cubic crystals) display striations. Its polymorphic variant is called marcasite, and it crystallizes in the orthorhombic system.

Marcasite is also an iron sulfide mineral.
It has the same chemical composition as pyrite but crystallizes in the orthorhombic system (dimorphism), leading the two minerals to be often confused macroscopically. Its color is bronze-yellow, often deviating towards gray-green or gray. Its crystals are short-prismatic, thick-plated, while the larger ones have a foliated structure with serrations.

The name “marcasite” derives from the Arabic or Moorish word for pyrites in general.
