Athena (Greek: Ἀθηνᾶ), in Greek mythology, was the goddess of wisdom, the olive tree, strategy, war, and the arts. Her Roman counterpart was Minerva (Latin: Minerva).
Athena was the beloved daughter of Zeus. Her mother was Metis, Zeus’ first wife. Zeus learned through a prophecy that Metis would give birth to the child who would overthrow him. Later, Zeus began to suffer from headaches and called Hephaestus to help him. Then Hephaestus hit Zeus on the head with a large hammer and Athena jumped out fully armed, wearing a helmet and holding a shield. Seeing Zeus, Athena threw them at his feet, a sign of recognition of him as the supreme god and her father.

The owl is a symbol of wisdom and prudence. The symbolism comes from antiquity and Greek mythology when the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and learning, was impressed by its large eyes and serious appearance.
