Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC) was one of the most important military leaders and conquerors of antiquity. He was born in Pella, Macedonia, the son of King Philip II and Olympias. From a young age, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic abilities, and his tutor was the philosopher Aristotle, who instilled in him a love for philosophy and the sciences.
He ascended the throne in 336 BC after the assassination of his father and embarked on a grand campaign with the goal of conquering the Persian Empire. In just a few years, he conquered a vast territory stretching from Greece to India. One of his most significant battles was the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC, where he defeated Darius III, the king of the Persians.
Apart from his military genius, Alexander had a vision of uniting different cultures. He encouraged marriages between his soldiers and local populations and founded many cities, the most famous being Alexandria in Egypt. His death at the age of just 32 in Babylon remains a mystery. After his death, his empire was divided among his generals, known as the Diadochi.
Alexander’s legacy remains strong, as his campaigns shaped the world of his time and contributed to the spread of Greek culture and language throughout the known world.
